Compensation within the bauxite-alumina industry in Jamaica
This report examines how compensation is managed within the bauxite-alumina industry in Jamaica. It presents the results of data collected through community surveys, desk reviews and case study research. The report examines Jamaica’s legal framework for mining, compares it to legislation in other parts of the Commonwealth, while also highlighting gaps in said framework. The report also presents the results of a survey carried out to determine the type of compensation received and the extent to which persons living in communities under a current mining lease or persons living near and downstream of bauxite-alumina processing facilities know their rights to compensation under the Mining Act (1947) and other local laws.
